Inspect Your Hotel Rooms with a Black Light Flashlight
You cannot be too careful about the cleanliness of hotel rooms. While some hotels are meticulous about sanitizing rooms, others are not. The best way to inspect a room for cleanliness is to use a black light flashlight. Black light flashlights use special LEDs that emit ultraviolet light. Ultraviolet light causes biological stains to react and glow. The best way to use a black light flashlight is to close the drapes and turn off the lights in the room. Shine the flashlight around the room, carefully inspecting the bathroom area and the sheets and pillows on the bed. The light will not appear to be very bright, but that is only because the light emitted is on the edge of the visible spectrum. It is actually very bright and should never be shined in eyes.
Pull back the blankets and sheets. Shine the ultraviolet light across the bedding. There should be nothing glowing on the sheets or pillows, except for perhaps some small fibers or lint. If you see any blotchy areas that look like stains, that very likely means that the linens have not been changed. When stains are found, call the front desk and have someone change the sheets.
It is not unusual to find that comforters have not been washed and may be covered with stains from food, wine and bodily fluids from sexual activities. We once found an entire bathroom floor that was contaminated due to a toilet that had previously overflowed. When you find contaminated beds, demand clean sheets. With a contaminated bathroom, demand that the area be cleaned and disinfected. A simple mopping does nothing to kill bacteria and germs.
Black light flashlights are inexpensive and can assure you that a room has been properly cleaned. From our experience, an expensive room does not necessarily mean that the room has been cleaned properly. Check every hotel room for cleanliness.
